The current dev build 4.0.xxxx has a set of developer tools. I knew about the inspect elements stuff before but without the “Net” panel it wasn’t good enough. But there is now a resources panel that seems to be working pretty well. I’ve been using the Dev build for a week and it seems pretty stable. I just finally set my default browser to chrome – now it’s my dev browser too!

I just wanted to add my thanks to this, along with some more keywords and phrases to help searchers find this solution. It took me months to stumble across these simple instructions, and they work great! Like many others I completely wiped my MacBook’s HD and so am not able to boot into OSX to fix the “no battery is detected” error in Windows 7 (and XP previously).

I know this is an outdated thread (even though these are still being sold on ebay and through dell), but can anyone answer the following questions:
1. Will this card, and the subsequent dell gps drivers, work with any computer (acer aspire one d250 in this instance) that has a mini PCI express slot?
2. Does the card have a dedicated uf-l connection for the gps antenna?
3. Does anyone know what gps chip this is using (sirf, u-blox, etc.)?
4. can the card be shut off (to reduce power consumption) through the driver utility?

Yea I’ve seen the element inspector and console, it’s handy but not quite as useful as a fully equipped firebug.

If they keep building it out native in the browser like that it could catch up pretty quick though.

have you tried chrome yet? Most of firebug’s functionality is built-in under the developer options. You can view the generated html rather than just the source, write arbitrary code to the page, and analyze the network activity

I do a lot of page profiling to hunt down rendering problems and bad javascript, and the only extension things that keep me on firefox are foxyproxy’s regex support (which is insanely great) and flash tracer (which if I wasn’t lazy I could replace with a log tail or something)

I really don’t know if this article is written as sarcasm. I have played Fable 2 and Fallout 3, not Crackdown, so I’ll leave that to the author.

Fable 2 was interesting, it kept me playing for a month or 2, but after I felt I had completed everything, I lost interest.

For Fallout 3 I have been playing for almost a year now and I keep coming back, I think the DLC helps. I have multiple (>3) characters at over 100 hours each. I just cant get enough.

Fantastic! I have Verizon Wireless and the MN624 version of the Dell 5720, and it works like a charm. I actually didn’t even need to make the registry modification. It turned out I bought this card not even knowing I have GPS. Tested it in the front yard and acquired right away.

Sure, that works (as I wrote in the first paragraph) but you’re killing explorer rather than unloading it. If you’re developing something that plugs into explorer, and need to test how your code unloads properly, then you need to be able to stop and restart explorer the way it would happen naturally. Hence the official way described above.

Ok, here’s the fix for those running only Windows and not MacOS.
Just follow these instructions on the Apple website to reset the SMC: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1411

It worked for me (Windows Vista x64 Business) on a MBP.
Below the steps to follow (the same as the link above):

MacBook, MacBook Pro except MacBook Pro (17-inch, Early 2009):
1. If the computer is on, turn it off.
2. Disconnect the AC adapter and remove the computer’s battery.
3. Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds and then release the button.
4. Reconnect the battery and AC Adapter.
5. Press the power button to restart the computer

MacBook Air (Original), MacBook Air (Late 2008) and MacBook Pro (17-inch, Early 2009)
1. If the computer is on, turn it off by choosing Shutdown from the Apple menu.
2. Connect the power adapter to a working power source.
3. On the built-in keyboard, press (left) Shift-Control-Option along with the power button once.
4. Wait 5 seconds and press the power button to start the computer.

You can purchase the card after, if you like, and install it yourself. There are internal antennae built into the laptop that you need to hook up to the card.

I just got it working in Windows 7 x64 Beta. Has anyone been able to get it working with Windows 7 Location Detection feature? I guess it natively supports GPS location services.

Tried the registry hack – sweet ! My GPS popped right up next time I opened the program. I have a Dell M1530, I’m indoors and my GPS had me located in about a minute. I’m guessing the built-in antenna helped.

Hey-Great post, but I figured this out about 2 years ago. To do this on Vista, Go to task manager and click on the Processes tab. Type ex (or just look for explorer.exe) and make sure what’s highlighted is explorer.exe. Click End Process and then click yes. Now, click the Applications tab. Go to the bottom and click New Task…. Type explorer.exe and then press (don’t hit, the keyboards don’t like that) enter. That’s also an assload simpler than doing the shut down. (No offense by the way)

I have the same problem. I have to wait hours to get my card to find enough satellites no matter where I am. I think this is the reason Dell does not support the GPS function on this card.

Tried to post once before, but for some reason it didn’t, so I’ll try again. I hope I get selected for the DLC code because I recieved the Fable II CE as a gift at the end of Feb and it didn’t have the DL:C card in it. When I contacted MS about it, they said unless I had the reciept to prove I bought it, there was nothing they could do. I called the relative who bought the game, but they had thrown away the reciept. So basically I’m S.O.L. at this point and you’ve become my last hope at getting what was paid for to begin with!

I got screwed because as it was a gift, I have no reciept and therefore when I tried to call MS about it to get a replacement code, they basically told me “tough shit” unless I could fax them the reciept. I agree with your assessment of Fallout 3. For me it’s also just kind boring but I’m not sure exactly why. Oblivion wasn’t boring.

For some reason it really annoys me how “realistic” they made certain aspects of the game but then you can shoot a guy point blank in the head and he acts like nothing happened. Sometimes I wonder where the game designer’s heads are at.

I found the registry key, got the icon and functionality in Dell application, however no drivers for GPS were installed – therefore I think I can;t get any fix (even when it says it is searching).
Do you know what should I do to install the drivers either manually or automatically? Restarting the application and WinXP did not help though…

I had the same issue. Try removing he battery, boot with power cable only then insert the battery. Vista did detect it immediately.

Took 2 minutes to install the drivers, another 10 to get the card activated, 2 more to realize no out of box gps functionality, 15 sec’s to locate modify and restart the dell broadband wireless connection utility and verify all was working the way I wanted it to be. NOT the way dell designed it NOT to work! F&*( the corporate world!!!

I found a ysmenu builder and was able to get my card booting off of non-SDHC media, so I’m still limited to 2GB even though I purchased a 4GB SDHC card with the R4.

The folks at YallStore finally responded and sent me a link to yet another firmware that doesn’t work on the card they sold me. Sweet.

The GPS signal is NOT obtained from cell phone towers. This is true. The Dell software requires you to be online to check that the device is currently active, but the GPS is GPS.

I would also like to clairify a few of the lies that Dell Tech support told me.

An active Sprint Data Subscription is NOT required.
The GPS signal is NOT obtained from cell phone towers.
A “GPS only account” does not exist at Sprint.
Do not call Sprint unless it’s to buy a data plan.
The Latitude E6400 ATG is NOT the only Dell laptop with an LCD GPS antenna.
You do not need ANY of the Dell ControlPoint applications.
No registry hack is required on Latitude E6400.

I spent hours trying to install this card after the initial factory build. Thank you for the information. Because there is still very little information about this product and HORRIBLE tech support as mentioned I wanted to contribute. My laptop is a Dell Latitude E6400.

If you are adding this card after the initial system build delete the computer and start from scratch! You do not need to worry about any registry hacks.
Install
Dell Wireless 5720 Sprint Mobile Broadband (EVDO Rev-A) MiniCard, Driver – 08-22-2008 – R194239
You have to launch the Mobile Broadband Card Utility and you will see the GPS icon appear. Open the GPS panel and Start the service and configure it to auto start so that you do not need to launch the utility each time that you reboot.

DO NOT INSTALL!!!

Now I need help. I only bought this card for GPS laptop tracking.

I want a hidden background application that is in the startup and relays the GPS coordinates to a server. 3dtracking.net is almost exactly what I am looking for but they do not have an application that will install on a PC, only mobile phones.

Surprisingly I cannot find any applications. I have configured my HTC Mogul and Touch Pro to live track on a Google Map (very cool), but I cannot find a similar application that will run on my PC. The phone app link is http://free.3dtracking.net

Hi, i checked out Gemsweeper, a nonogram puzzle .I was impressed with the graphics,ease of learning, the helpful tutorial and jungle theme. I enjoy playing all kinds of nonograms. Gemsweeper is my favourite out of all the nonogram puzzles i have played so far.

Does the system recognize your iPod? Perhaps they’re using 32-bit executables, but with a driver that allows your 64 bit install to recognize it. The driver has to specifically be 64-bit for the OS to recognize it, but after that, either 64-bit or 32-bit programs can access it through the OS.

If you have Vista there is a quick way to get an Admin cmd prompt. Click the Start button… Enter cmd in the search section but press Ctrl+Shift+Enter, instead of clicking, you’ll get a privilege escalation dialog click OK and you end up with an Admin command prompt, helpfully labeled as Administrator: C:\Windows\system32\cmd.exe

This is the best way to run fat32format. It’s always been Admin only, it’s just that on XP most power users ran with Admin rights all the time.

I just used it myself and it works fine.

My wife got one Sep. 18, in NJ. I tried to pay online for her, but got the exact message Rajiv did, _unable to locate the ticket information_. So I called the court, it was picked up in 2 minutes. The lady who picked up the phone said that, it’s probably not in the system yet, check back in a week.

A week?! They have a Pentium II-300 mhz computers with a 500mb hard drive? The workhorse desktop model of 1991?

A few weeks ago I got a parking ticket in Manhattan. Three days later, I got online and paid for the ticket. Quick and very simple process. I actually enjoyed paying for it!

This is 2008, things like this can be linked online… why don’t the courts and the police electronically link their systems?

The funniest thing is the “ONLINE PAYMENT HOURS!” They really have actual people responding to each http request?

Imagine the man working on Xmas day…

“Boss, may I go home and do this from my laptop? I _do_ have internet signals at home.” Let him go, the public probably won’t notice that he accepted the payment from home.

I have a very similiar problem with my dell mobile broadband card utility (Verizon). Dell continues to log on to my brand new laptop remotely and tell me that I need to contact Verizon. I have tried everything including looking for updates, reinstalling the software, etc with no luck. After stumpling upon this site I tried searching the registry with all of the key workds I could think of but haven’t been able to find it. Any suggestions?

It’s *very* confusing, but I think you just never looked at itunes running in task manager before it did the update – it should have looked exactly the same. (the 64-bit itunes installer ever since it came around is just an itunes that *works* correctly in x64)

Right, I would LOVE to get a bugfixed version for Sprint. Whenever I come out of sleep it’s a bear to reconnect, the only way to guaranty is to remove the network device (if it’s there) and the modem device in device manager and then scan for hardware changes.

It sucks to come out of sleep and then while you’re on batter spend 4-5 minutes screwing around getting the thing back online. The bugfix list shows bugfixes that look like they might take care of this. Only problem is, Verizon only at the moment.

Running Windows XP SP2, try as I might, I can’t get this to work. (Oh, is the “1″ value decimal or hexadecimal?).

Several versions of Dell’s Broadband Utility will not install if it’s not a Dell system. The one that I have that does install is 2.05.31.26 with a driver version 3.0.0.3

I have spent a good part of today trying to discover if there is an updated DB utility that will work on a non-Dell machine and would give me the GPS option.

I’m on ATT/Cingular, btw.

I got one on July 13th and the officer that issued the ticket said to call the number on the back. Except he pulls away i look at the back and go figure there is no number on there. The ticket has yet to show up on the page also. Its pretty much useless if you ask me.

I figured out how to install the Sprint Smartview software on xp 64. It is a matter of altering the setup.msi file. Download the smartview software from sprint and run it. It will decompress the setup files to a temp folder, then begin the setup routine, at which point it will immediately display an error message saying that you have to have Windows XP service pack 2 or windows vista. At that point, locate the folder that the documents have been uncompressed to in your “c:\documents and settings\\local settings\temp” folder. In my case it was named “WZSE0.TMP”. Copy this folder to another location somewhere on your hard drive BEFORE pressing the “OK” button on that error message window, because when you press ok, the temporary install files are deleted. Then install ORCA from Microsoft. In the WZSE0.TMP folder, right click on setup.msi and open with orca. Locate the “LaunchCondition” variable and delete its os check condition. Save the file and run it. It’ll work then.

I have the 5520 (Cingular) card. This procedure also works for this card. It is the same key, in my case it’s in HKLM\Software\Novatel Wireless\NextGenCommon, as he said because I’m using a 32 bit OS.

Ah, sorry, my bad. I didn’t get it to find this card, I have another card that sprint sells that is fine coming out of sleep etc, it’s an expresscard. Also I complained at Dell long and hard and they couldn’t help me with that. I think it’s possible though, I just haven’t had time to work on it.

You need to be outside or in a room full of windows for the satellite search to work. It worked for me once I went outside.

I have the same problem as you with my Dell D420 with an original 5720 card and XP installed. I can launch the GPS screen in the DMBCU but it does “searching” and does not find satellites. I am on Verizon.

In Device Manager under Ports, I see “Dell Wireless 5720 VZW Mobile Broadband (EVDO Rev-A) Minicard GPS Port (COM8), which would indicate that the driver installed. It is a Novatel Wireless Driver v3.0.3.0 dated 2/8/2008.

Anyone else get this working? Which driver are you using?

I have another hard drive (new) and I’m thinking of re-installing XP from scratch to see if that might have something to do with it… but I probably won’t get around to that until next month.

I bought TrekStor 500GB usb drive. Plugged it in my laptop with WinXP SP2. Everythin worked well except small files copied slowly. I copied all movies and music to USB drive to free laptops internal harddrive. I feld good that I have backup drive so no more DVD burning.

I hooked up USB drive to my older WinXP SP2 workstation. While making backup of my old movie and music files a deleyed write error occured. Windows hangs and I made one stupid mistake to shutdown USB drive to gain some kind of control to OS. USB drive had FAT32 file system that went corrupted to windows. Now WinXP does not even see the drive and I tried to chkdsk /f on drive but it crashed also and made windows unstable.

So I backed up something that I should not. I did not find any way to recover my USB drive. Däm. I tried Ubuntu linux to check if it could see the drive. After a long while wazaa the files are recovered thanks to linux. All I have to do is use ubuntu live cd on workstation with enoung harddrive space and copy files to safety. I do not trust USB drive backup utility enymore. DVD it is then.

I must format the USB drive to use it in WinXP

I made the registry change on my Dell Latitude D630 with the Verizon 5720. Restarted the DMBCU and the GPS drivers were installed an the icon popped up on the toolbar.

I got a timeout when searching for satellites. I was inside the office so I figured I would need to go outside. I had it running in the car while driving home and it found 8 satellites.

Originally I thought it may not work since my card has not been activated with Verzion for broadband access. When I ordered the D630 I added the 5720 just in case I may use it down the road. At $60/month I’m not in need of mobile broadband.

I installed iGuidance 4.0 and set the GPS port to Comm 9 which the DMBCU was reporting. As soon as I started the iGuidance program zoomed to my location. I’m heading out for a ride to see it in action!

I got a ticket the same day on rt 80 in Morris Co.
It took 2 weeks for it to appear online and the day I checked it, it said it was payable. I checked back 2 days later so I could pay it and then it said it’s not payable. I hate New Jersey.

I have the same problem with my MacBook Pro. I’m running Vista with SP1 RC1 — it showed the battery for a few weeks and was working great, then one day I got the “no battery detected” message.

Kurt, as a note you can always flip your laptop over, press the button on the battery and the green lights indicate how much juice you have left. If you only see one flashing green light then you should plug it in. I should also note that I have fully drained the battery twice on accident (didn’t realize I was unplugged) and Vista seems to handle it gracefully — I immediatly plugged back in, press the power button and I was back with all my applications still open.

ImgBurn is nice but unless you don’t burn ISO images every day it’s useless… There’s no way to burn random folder (say set of JPGs from the photo camera) to the CD with it, there’s no way to create DVD-Video from the muxed MPEG content your video camera saved, you cannot burn MP3 CD to listen in the car stereo etc etc etc. So I’d personally give a try to the StarBurn from here:

Just an update, the 1.0.2 update doesn’t seem to have fixed this, either. If I sync, then immediately hit “sync” again, so there’s no actual work to perform, it takes up to 5 minutes on a 2.0Ghz Core2Duo (thank god I have the dual core, since it maxes out 1 core to 100% CPU for a lot of the time).

I love Team Fortress 2 that is in the Orange Box! My friend has already set up a server with co-location from Nationwide Bandwidth 67.90.47.47, (a must to every server owner, imo) and we are enjoying it with many other gamers.

Okay, so I don’t have a Macbook, I have a Dell.
The battery is there… it charges, and the computer runs fine without wall power. But it swears that there is no battery. Any solutions here?

Problem is HSDPA has all kinds of lag and isn’t widely deployed yet with AT&T/Cingular and barely at all with T-Mobile (though they do have a roaming agreement with each other) , EDGE sucks (ask anyone with an iPhone), Verizon won’t give you unlimited, they cut you off after a certain amount of usage, and what else is there?
